Fattoria I'll Poggio 'Day 1'

The first day at the farm we started with a wine and bruschetta with olive oil tasting. The first two wines we tasted were sweeter white wines and were very refreshing. The third white wine we tasted was from 100% Chardonnay grapes and was a white Incantate. The bruschetta was fresh and unsalted, with a heavy (but good) amount of olive oil on the top. The tuscans don't salt their bread because in the renaissance era they were under the control of the Roman Pope and he had put a tax on salt. For this reason they stopped adding salt to their bread, to save money. Food in the Tuscan area is also heavy with salt, so having salt in the bread isn't completely necessary.
After this first tasting we went on a walk around the farm and saw the olive and grape trees they use to make their wine and olive oil. The views from the farm were absolutely amazing because of the location on the hill. Everyone spent time having some great photo shoots and enjoying the views. We ventured back for a second tasting of red wine, meat, and cheese. We tasted three red wines, all that varied in dryness. The meats included a salami and ham, and there were three different cheeses that were paired with honey. All the foods were fresh and had a savory taste. The wines were all very different from each other, but all much more tasteful than those in the United States.
Everyone talked and laughed throughout the whole time at the farm and experienced fresh Tuscan food & wine. Overall the farm and the people there were amazing and it was a great experience for all!!
